Rule # 1, #2 and #3 :
Pack Light
The difference between a fun day and a death march is pack weight.
Medical experts recommend that backpacks are ideally be around 10% of body weight.
Pack weight should not exceed 15% of a child's body weight.

Lightweight backpacking recommends base backpack weights for all adults (this is the backpack loaded with all gear except water and food) around 20 lbs.
Shoes: Once you have a light pack you no longer need hiking boots! Wear your comfortable running/walking shoes
